Does anybody have a Japanese language school in Japan that they would recommend? For a very
short-term, intensive, ultra-immersion programme (and maybe also in a nice location, like Kyoto or
a small town somewhere more 'traditional' -- but hopefully not to the extent that they run away
when they see a foreigner). Thanks!

Dear all,
My name is Sharon. I am a research student at the University of Birmingham.
Many of you may know me as I posted a message before regarding the language exchange project.
First of all, I would like to thank the people who joined the previous project.
It was indeed an interesting and exciting experience for all of us.
Because of the design of the project, the same process will be taken once again
For those who wished to join but couldn't because of the limited vacancies of the participants
last time, here's your chance!
For those who think they want to add something different to their summer vacation, please do not
hesitate to contact me.
I promise you will not only improve your Chinese with the native speakers, but, most of all, learn
more about Chinese/ Taiwanese cultures.
Plus, your Taiwanese epals are all trainee teachers. I am sure you will benefit a lot from our
future teachers.
If you think you might be interested to know more about the project, please write to me at
emailme2006@gmail.com.
I will e-mail you more details about the project.
look forward to hearing from you!
Best wishes,
Sharon

I always used to wonder about tones in music. I now realize they are impossible* (at least in the
westernized pop music, couldn't comment on any traditional forms). One can only conclude that
chinese lyrics must be lacking in expressiveness being deprived of such a crucial indicator of
meaning. That is to say, unless one is singing in a very predictable context, a purely aural
listener would easily get lost.
*i'm just waiting for someone to come in and try to tell me that they can hear tones when they
listen to pop music. When i was beginning to learn chinese and asked people about this many csl
learners told me they could hear them but no native speakers could honestly say the same. I guess
in a sense they may have been hearing them in their mind's ear.

I certainly can hear tones in music !
But let's not be making sweeping claims here: the problems with tone in Chinese music is not far
different from the situations we may face with music in any other languages. In English, we
sometimes have no problems with understanding (=making out the words in) the lyrics and at other
times we have no clues what's being sung. Even when we know/understand the lyrics, we also realise
that sometimes the pronunciation is a bit off the way we normally speak. Chinese tones are
similarly sometimes distorted due to the contour of the music or the type of the music, but not
always and not in normal circumstances. Anyway, there have been interesting discussions about this
relation in this forums, try a search and you may find them.

There's not a more predictable context than a Chinese pop song . . .

i don't think their sometimes distorted. I'm 100% sure that they are almost never there. Unless
you're listening to some very strange songs that build the tones into the melody (which would
sound pretty strange, i'd be interested to hear), then it's impossible to simultaneously sing a
melody (as we know it) and account for tones.
As for the predictable context, imagine a song like this being sung in chinese. I think without a
lyric sheet the listener would be totally lost. Whereas most of the words can be understood in
english if one pays close attention.
Points for identifying the song by the way.
That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes, an aeroplane -
Lenny Bruce is not afraid. Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn -
world serves its own needs, don't misserve your own needs. Feed it up a knock,
speed, grunt no, strength no. Ladder structure clatter with fear of height,
down height. Wire in a fire, represent the seven games in a government for
hire and a combat site. Left her, wasn't coming in a hurry with the furies
breathing down your neck. Team by team reporters baffled, trump, tethered
crop. Look at that low plane! Fine then. Uh oh, overflow, population,
common group, but it'll do. Save yourself, serve yourself. World serves its
own needs, listen to your heart bleed. Tell me with the rapture and the
reverent in the right - right. You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright
light, feeling pretty psyched.
in_lab -
In Chinese the listener would have a really hard time making sense of all that, but the same goes
for English. If those lyrics have meaning for you, it is probably only because you have read and
thought about the lyrics. After "It starts with an earthquake," the words don't really mean
anything to me.

AFAIK, most Cantonese songs follow the tones in their melodies.
owen -
in_lab, you missed my point. All i'm saying is that the words themselves, individually can, for
the most part, be deciphered. Like if walked up to you and said 'horse sunny jazz then italicize
ballon can't soup very', you might look puzzled but you would know the words which had been said.
I'm not sure the same could be done in chinese, at least not in a song.
I asked my friend who majored in jazz vocal and who currently sings pop and jazz with a few
different ensembles. I asked her whether she has ever heard any canto pop and she said she had.
Then i also showed her a jolin tsai song and she said in that song or in any canto pop she's heard
she didn't notice any marked difference between the singing style of those songs and western pop,
i.e. no tones in either.
Someone should do a test. Get a native speaker who can sing decently and then write a randomn
string of characters. Ask them to sing it to some popular tune and have another native speaker
listen. Then see how many tones they can get right. I'd bet my life they would get no more than
pure chance would allow.
wai ming -
Erm, just a minor point... but I'm pretty sure Jolin Tsai doesn't sing in Cantonese
And while there might not be any difference in singing style, the tones of the lyrics of most
Cantonese songs will fit the melodies. You might find this link of interest.

Quote:

Too much so now that the lyrics become nonsensical garbage.
in_lab -
Owen, I understood your point, but what I meant is that it doesn't really matter. In Chinese it
can be difficult to understand words devoid of meaningful context, but words that are devoid of
meaningful context are essentially meaningless. In English, you understand the words, but they
mean nothing.

I used to listen to a lot of chinese music but I slowly lost interests about 4 years ago.
So I'm kinda outdated, and now I'd like to get back in the loop and get into chinese music again.
I need your help because I don't have any friends that listens to chinese music.
I really liked Jeff Chang (張信哲). Has he released any new albums in the past 4 years? Can you
recommend a few artists that sounds like him?

Beyond

I really like this song ....

againstwind's post of Qi Qin reminds me of this variation:
轻轻地
我将离开你
请将眼角的泪拭去
漫漫长夜未来日子里
呼尔嗨呦,亲爱的你别为我哭泣
Sung to the tune of "The East is Red" (东方红).

I like traditional chinese songs
Sadly, I didn't heared a lot of modern bands- only S.H.E ~~ or Miriam Yeung...
But this song is really nice:
Miriam Yeung - Not Scare of Anything
By the way: is anyone here, who wants to tell me what the song is about ?
I can't understand even a single word, in spite of the subtitles
skylee -
A rough translation of the song (Not scared of anything) ->
Thanks for taking me to tea, telling me nice bullshit
Please, take my handkerchief, and wipe your mouth
Don't be too harsh on yourself, or you will lose your hair
You are great, not taking me to meet her
I fear nothing, if you don't love me
It won't cost you much
Just make a phone call and tell me about it
I fear nothing, I am no fool
Hating you will cost me a lot
When I get home, I will wait patiently for the next guy
There are many ways to break up, the best is to let him go
Although without a fight it will not be dramatic enough
If I need to vent my anger, I'll pretend that I am an artist
Buy a guitar that I like, and then smash it hard
I fear nothing, if you don't love me
It won't cost you much
Just make a phone call and tell me about it
I fear nothing, I am no fool
Hating you will cost me a lot
When I get home, I will wait patiently for the next guy

Hi everyone, Im new here.
Im looking for tips on passing a Mandarin ALTA test.
Im at the beginner level of speaking and listening Mandarin.
Im currently using Pimsleur, textbooks and speaking to people online.
I have 2 weeks of vacation in May and was wondering what is the best way of spending this time in
Beijing. Class, travelling, staying with a family, or teaching English would help me the most?
THANKS in advance!

Chinese Mandarin - Pickpocket-prone routes named
CITYLIFE / Hip & New
Pickpocket-prone routes named
(CRI)
Updated: 2007-07-06 09:54
In a bid to reduce the number of thefts, Beijing police on Tuesday for
the first time named ten bus routes most prone to pickpockets.
The Municipal Public Security Bureau wants passengers to take better care
of their belongings and has released the list drawn from analysis of
recent pickpocket cases, as well as reports received at the city's
anti-pickpocket hotline.
Among the listed bus routes are No. 9, which connects the city's two
busiest railway stations, and No. 728, which travels across the city.
Police said passengers taking such long-distance bus trips are likely to
fall asleep, making them easy targets for pickpockets.
The items most likely to be snatched by pickpockets are mobile phones,
cash and bank cards, but also include gold necklaces which thieves try
stealing on crowded buses.
Pickpocket thefts are most likely to happen during the 7 to 9am and 6 to
8pm rush hours, when people are traveling between home and work.
Besides the list, police are also encouraging witnesses to report
robberies to the city's anti-pickpocket hotline at 6401 1327.
The ten named bus routes are:
9, 57, 701, 707, 728, 44, 300, 302, 808, and the Bus Rapid Transit route
between Qianmen and Demaozhuang in Daxing district.

Jackson's trial on charges of child molestation. [AP]
WASHINGTON - Michael Jackson has been hunting for real estate on
Maryland's Eastern Shore as he searches for a vacation home, a publicist
for the pop star said.
The self-proclaimed King of Pop visited the rural peninsula last week
"for about 24 hours," but has not made a purchase, Raymone Bain told The
Washington Post.
Jackson, 48, is not limiting his search to the Chesapeake region. He has
since "gone up the coast" to look elsewhere for a vacation place, Bain
said.
"He's always admired the properties on the East Coast because they have a
lot of land," Bain said in the story published Wednesday. "Neverland has
3,000 acres he likes privacy. You can't find as many properties like
that on the West Coast."
Jackson came east with his children about 10 days ago for meetings
because "the majority of his advisers and attorneys are on the East
Coast," Bain said.
She would not elaborate on the purpose of the meetings, but said that
Jackson was dealing with "a laundry list" of issues. "He's head of a vast
corporation," Bain said.

Named after the two friends who started it, this live music venue has a
loyal following among serious local rockers and the fans who love them.
Simple and priced at the student crowd, in the summer they throw regular
parties on the ample lawn outside. Expect live jams, rock gigs and a hip
indie crowd. Perfect for catching underground bands.

Learning Chinese - Not merely a weed

Not merely a weed
(smartshanghai.com)

Something is happening on what was once a sleepy stretch of Fuxing Lu.
This boho part of town, once perfect for a meandering walk through old
lanes, has become the choice spot for those seeking a quiet cup of
caffeine and their fix of mellow Jazz. Taking in the sights of the
embassy guards' daily march, happy little children being dropped off by
their parents, once propelled the ambiance at a few of Shanghai's most
recognized institutions: Y+ Yoga and JZ Club. In little over a year
Fuxing Xi Lu has become a little hot spot that has sprouted many cafes
and restaurants, and it looks like it will continue to bloom.
Most of the cafes and restaurants on this street cater to the bohemian
community living and working around these blocks who enjoy well priced
coffee, drinks and meals. The most recent addition to Fuxing Lu's artsy
block is Arugula, a stone's (or boomerang's) throw away from Tara 57 and
La Bella Cafe, which raises the bar in this area with its concept, menu
and architectural design, but luckily not too much in prices.
Those loving this weed the Italians call Arugula would know this name
instantly and what it may conjure up, otherwise know as Rocket and Lort,
to me it's a bloody good tasting weed. With such a fresh name, and its
original pungent flavour, Arugula produced thoughts of what is to be
expected. On approach to this delightful restaurant, made easier by its
flamboyant or outrageous bright orange exterior, thoughts of the bitter
taste of Arugula in every thing on the menu filled my head with
excitement. However this wasn't to be as this fabulous weed appeared only
on a few dishes in the menu, most notably the signature Arugula Canard
Salad (48rmb), tossed together with slices of duck breast and cherry
tomatoes in an orange dressing, perfect for a summer lunch. Other dishes
that feature Arugula include burgers (65rmb) and salads. The rest of the
menu includes German mains, such as Pork Knuckle with Sauerkraut
(120rmb), Steaks (from 110rmb), pastas (from 45rmb), seafood and lamb. I
tried the Grilled Lamb Chops (85rmb), the lamb was well looked after and
tender, dressed with zucchinis and asparagus and a pepper sauce left me
pleased with my selection, it was a little salty for my taste, however I
do like my meals light on the salt. The menu is simple and doesn't have
much variety, but to me this makes choosing a lot easier. The only thing
missing on the menu is smoothies or shakes for the weekend brunch or
those hard mornings.
The interior is casual chic, with its comfy mix and match sofa-like
chairs and ever popular high exposed ceilings. My first impressions were
quite impressive. Set in a 3 story lane house, Arugula has all the charms
you'd expect. And it's easy to find, just keep your eye out for a very
orange building when peeking in the laneways and you won't miss it.
With Leo (formerly from Naked Cow) behind the helm, you can expect
interesting cocktails on its drinks menu, his Infusion is already proving
quite popular with the ladies (and the gentlemen who reap the benefits-
something cheeky?).
Apart from the usual lunch and dinners, Arugula plans on providing its
clientele with all the usual promotions, such as business drink happy
hours, weekend brunches and cocktail specials.
Overall my visit to Arugula left me with positive notes, as I would
definitely be going back with my mates.

Tom Sizemore's prison sentenced reduced

Tom Sizemore's 16-month prison sentence for violating probation in a drug
case was dramatically reduced Tuesday.
Superior Court Judge Cynthia Rayvis gave the actor 213 days of credit for
time he has already spent in jail and two live-in drug programs, leaving
him with about nine months in state prison.
Sizemore will likely serve about 4 1/2 months of that, said Deputy
District Attorney Sean Carney.
The 45-year-old actor, who has been in jail without bail since June 5,
wasn't in court Tuesday. An after-hours call to his lawyer, Fay Arfa,
wasn't immediately returned.
The judge ordered the sentence Monday after authorities said they
discovered methamphetamine in the actor's car and arrested him in
Bakersfield last month. Sizemore was charged with seven drug-related
counts, including transportation and possession of methamphetamines and
being under the influence of a controlled substance.
Sizemore, who has appeared in films such as "Saving Private Ryan" and
"Black Hawk Down," acknowledged during a court appearance on June 19 that
he had violated his probation.
He faces up to six years in prison if convicted of all the charges filed
by Kern County prosecutors.

November 22, 2006.[Reuters]
Paul McCartney will play a "surprise" concert at a Los Angeles record
store on Wednesday, a spokesman said.
The former Beatle, whose new album enjoyed a strong start on the pop
charts earlier this month, will perform at Amoeba Records in Hollywood
about 7:30 p.m. PDT.
In lieu of launching a full-scale concert tour to promote "Memory Almost
Full," McCartney is playing a few hastily arranged free shows in small
venues.
The Amoeba gig will come two weeks to the day after he dusted off Beatles
tunes and a handful of new songs for about 700 fans at the Highline
Ballroom in New York's Chelsea district.
"Memory Almost Full," McCartney's first release under a new deal with a
label co-founded by coffee retailer Starbucks Corp., has spent two weeks
at No. 3 on the U.S. pop charts, giving him his best showing in years.

James Bond, Narnia under new management
(E! Online)
Updated: 2007-06-22 14:20
Los Angeles- He'll always take orders from M, but James Bond's next
mission is going to be crafted by a 007 rookie.
Finding Neverland director Marc Forster has been tapped to helm the next
installment of the 45-year-old Bond franchise, what will be the 22nd film
featuring the oh-so-suave secret agent.
The German filmmaker recently wrapped the big-screen adaptation of Khaled
Hosseini's bestseller The Kite Runner. Before that, he tried his hand at
comedy with Stranger Than Fiction; was nominated for a Golden Globe for
his work on the fantastical Peter Pan-inspired drama Finding Neverland,
which also scored Johnny Depp his second Oscar nod; and directed Halle
Berry to an Oscar win for Monster's Ball.
"I have always been drawn to different kinds of stories and I have also
always been a Bond fan, so it is very exciting to take on this
challenge," Forster said. "The new direction that the Bond character has
taken offers a host of new possibilities." He and Oscar-winning Million
Dollar Baby scribe Paul Haggis are expected to start tackling a first
draft that was written by Neil Purvis and Robert Wade.
Daniel Craig, the first blonde Bond, will be back for a second go-round
after turning in a much-appreciated performance in Casino Royale that
actually made his dapper daredevil of a character seem a little rough
around the edgesbut in a good way.
And despite being inured to Pierce Brosnan's know-it-all smirk, audiences
seemed to dig a Bond who pointedly replied, "Do I look like I give a
damn?" when a bartender asked the eternal question, "Shaken or stirred?"
In turn, Casino Royale, based on the first novel in Ian Fleming's series
revolving around the seemingly immortal MI-6 agent, grossed more than
$594 million worldwide.
The as-yet untitled chapter, being referred to by studio heads as Bond 22
for now, is slated to start shooting in London in December, with a
release date of Nov. 7, 2008.
Also changing hands is the burgeoning Chronicles of Narnia series, which
is actually now heading under the tutelage of a former Bond movie
director.
The World Is Not Enough director Michael Apted will be taking the reins
from Andrew Adamson, who oversaw The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and
the upcoming Prince Caspian (all based on the novels by C.S. Lewis), and
set sail with The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, due out in 2009.
"We're thrilled that [Apted] will be directing The Voyage of the Dawn
Treader and feel that he brings his own unique sensibilities, filmmaking
experience and vision to the project," Oren Aviv, president of production
for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, said about the British
filmmaker, who's also currently president of the Directors Guild of
America.
"This latest Narnia adventure will take people to an entirely different
side of Narnia that no one has ever seen before, and is filled with lots
of action, adventure, magic and wonder," Aviv continued. "We think
moviegoers are going to be thrilled with this all-new installment."
Prince Caspian makes its debut first, however, on May 16, 2008, long
before The Voyage of the Dawn Treader hits theaters May 1, 2009.
Apted most recently worked with Disney on last year's Amazing Grace,
about Britain's abolitionist movement in the 19th century.

LIMA (AFP) - Hollywood star Cameron Diaz arrived Tuesday in Cusco, the
capital of the ancient Inca empire, on vacation with guests and a
security team, the official news agency Andina reported.
Diaz, 34, star of "Charlie's Angels" and "There's Something About Mary,"
checked into a hotel in downtown Cusco, a city 3,400 meters (11,155 feet)
above sea level some 600 kilometers (373 miles) south-east of Lima.
After a short rest the Cuban-American star turned heads as she went for a
walk in the city's historic plaza.
Diaz plans to visit the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu and attend annual
re-enactment of the Inti Raymi, the Inca festival of the sun and a major
Cusco tourist draw, according to Andina.
Regularly voted one of the world's most beautiful women, Diaz plans stay
in Cusco until June 26, Andina reported.
Diaz's film credits include "Gangs of New York" and "The Mask."
Macchu Picchu is one of 21 historical sites in an internet competition to

"Die Hard" tops magazine list of best action
(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-06-15 10:29
LOS ANGELES - "Die Hard," starring Bruce Willis as a tough cop battling
terrorists, was named the best action film ever by Entertainment Weekly
magazine -- two weeks before the series' fourth installment, "Live Free
or Die Hard," hits theaters.
The magazine on Thursday unveiled a list of top 25 action movies picked
by its writers and editors spanning a wide range of films: from 1938's
"The Adventures of Robin Hood" to director Akira Kurosawa's "Seven
Samurai" in 1954 (No. 6) and the 2004 computer-animated film, "The
Incredibles" (No. 25).
Space adventure "Aliens" followed "Die Hard" in the No. 2 slot with
"Raiders of the Lost Ark" at No. 3 and "The Road Warrior" and "The
Matrix" at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
But it was 1988's "Die Hard," starring Willis as tough-as-nails New York
cop John McClane who battles terrorists in a Los Angeles high-rise, that
blew the biggest Hollywood fireball for the magazine's staff.
Back in summer 1988, "Die Hard" was notable mostly for its gun battles
and explosions, including blowing up an L.A. high-rise. The movie raked
in $138 million worldwide and made Willis a major movie star.
Two sequels, "Die Hard 2: Die Harder" and "Die Hard With a Vengeance,"
followed in 1990 and 1995, respectively.
The fourth film, "Live Free or Die Hard," lands in theaters on June 27,
and this time McClane is saving the world from a mad genius mounting a
digital attack on computer networks.
An Entertainment Weekly spokeswoman said the list was picked without any
regard to "Live Free's" opening date or its interview with Willis that
hits newsstands on Friday.
"After we finalized the list, we asked for interviews with key players in
the movies we picked," the spokeswoman said. "'Die Hard"' was going to be
No. 1 anyway."
Some of the more recent films making the top 25 included "Spider-Man 2"
and "Kill Bill -- Vol. 1," while older titles ranged from 1964 James Bond
movie "Goldfinger" to 1973's martial arts flick "Enter the Dragon,"
starring Bruce Lee.

In addition to repeating his Nixon performance in the Ron Howard film
based on Peter Morgan's London and Broadway play, Variety reports that
the three-time Tony winner will star as an energy industry executive in
"On the Hook," an independent thriller being produced by Linda Moran and
Rene Bastian.
Richard Ledes ("A Hole in One") will direct Langella, Elliott Gould and
Laura Harring in the picture. The screenplay is by Alan Didier-Weill. "On
the Hook" will shoot this summer. Roadside Attractions snagged worldwide
rights to Andrew Wagner's 2007 Sundance film, "Starting Out in the
Evening," which also stars Langella as a writer who has a relationship
with a graduate student played by Lauren Ambrose. That movie is expected
to have a fall release.
"Frost/Nixon" film production begins later this year, following the
limited engagement of the play on Broadway (to Aug. 19).
Langella's London and Broadway Frost/Nixon co-star Michael Sheen will
reprise his role as TV charmer and playboy David Frost.
Langella's recent film credits include "Superman Returns" and "Good
Night, and Good Luck." Ron Howard is directing "Frost/Nixon," which has a
screenplay by its playwright, Peter Morgan ("The Queen").
Langella is also a Tony Award winner for his work in Seascape and
Fortune's Fool.

BERLIN - Galvanized by the success of "Shrek the Third," Jeffrey
Katzenberg says the tale of the green ogre who married a princess will
continue. "More Shreks are coming!" producer Katzenberg, flanked by
"Shrek" stars Cameron Diaz, Mike Myers and Justin Timberlake, said at a
news conference in Berlin on Friday.
American film producer and CEO of DreamWorks Animation SKG Jeffrey
Katzenberg poses with the character Shrek for photographers during a
media event before the evening's premier of 'Shrek the Third,' Thursday,
June 7, 2007 in Paris, France. [AP]
Katzenberg said there will be a half-hour animated TV special, "Shrek the
Halls," featuring the Shrek characters' versions of holiday traditions.
As for the plot of the fourth installment of the "Shrek" movie franchise,
Katzenberg would only reveal that Shrek will have to come to terms with
something difficult in his past.
The DreamWorks animated blockbuster opens in Germany on June 21.
Timberlake, who voices the future King Arthur, said his favorite moment
while working on "Shrek the Third" was listening to director Chris Miller
do the voices of the animated cast.
"He can actually do every voice," said Timberlake. "He does a pretty good
Mike (Myers). He can't do a very good Shrek, but he can do a good Mike
doing Shrek, so it was a lot of fun to work with him."
